BREAKFAST IN SCHOOLS
During 2015 we ran a Breakfast in Schools programme
at Whangaparaoa, Stanmore Bay and Gulf Harbour primary schools. This
had been possible thanks to the support of the schools, local
businesses such as The Warehouse Whangaparaoa and Countdown
Whangaparaoa, a generous donation from Whangaparaoa Lions and
some individual anonymous donations. We equipped the
schools using donated goods from our Community Shop and
purchased new items where necessary. Volunteers from the
Community House and the schools served up breakfast to any
child who was feeling hungry for whatever reason.
Gulf Harbour and Whangaparaoa have now stopped the programme but
Stanmore Bay is still going well.
On the menu are Weetbix, Cornflakes, Ricies, Milo, toast with margarine, jam,
peanut butter, honey or Marmite. Sometimes there is also a piece
of fruit to take away. Children with full tummies tend to be
happier, learn more readily and behave more co-operatively.

SAFE HOUSE

The Safe House which provided temporary, emergency accommodation
to people through various agencies in the area has had to be
closed. Shiloh Trust was managing the house and the rent was
paid by the Community House. Unfortunately Auckland Transport
which owned the house has other plans for it now.
It is to be hoped that in the future we can
find another way of providing this vital service to our
community as the need for such a facility is well proven.
We are currently in discussions and will
inform everyone if this project is successful.

BUDGET ADVISOR
In another partnership, this time with Steps Forward (formerly Hibiscus Coast Family
Services), we are pleased to be able to offer budget advice from
our main site. This ties in well
with our Foodbank service and our support for families and
individuals who are finding it hard to make ends meet.
Katrina is available to give advice
and help people balance their budgets. They will take drop-in
queries but it is a better idea to make an appointment.
Ring
Steps Forward on 424 4584 to find out when the next session is
planned.

SUPPORT FOR LOCAL NOT-FOR- PROFIT GROUPS & ORGANISATIONS
Many local groups that do a wonderful job in the
community find it hard to get all the funding they need for
equipment, events, people and whatever else it takes to deliver
their service. We have been there ourselves in the past!
Applying for funding is a time-consuming and often disappointing
exercise.
To support these groups we are now offering the
chance to become the recipient of a day's takings from our
Community Shop. On the second Tuesday of each month we will be donating the takings for that day to a local not-for-profit group or organisation for a pre-approved purpose.
Each month we
will advertise who the recipient will be and will help to spread
the word about their work. You can help by dropping in to buy something on
that day.
